Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen mango chunks
  • 1 frozen banana, sliced
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup orange juice, plus more as needed
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 cup granola, for topping
  • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries, sliced, for topping
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened shredded coconut, for topping
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds, for topping

Instructions

  1. Add the frozen mango, frozen banana, and frozen pineapple to a high-powered blender. Using fruit that is fully frozen, not just chilled, is what gives the smoothie its thick, ice-cream-like texture.
  2. Add the Greek yogurt, orange juice, and honey to the blender on top of the frozen fruit.
  3. Secure the lid tightly and blend on low speed first for a few seconds to break up the large chunks, then increase to high speed.
  4. Blend for 60 to 90 seconds, stopping halfway to scrape down the sides with a spatula if the mixture is not moving freely, until completely smooth and thick with no visible fruit chunks remaining.
  5. Check the consistency: it should be thick enough to hold a spoon standing upright for a few seconds, similar to soft-serve ice cream. If it is too thick to blend, add orange juice 1 tablespoon at a time and blend briefly between additions.
  6. If the mixture is too thin and soupy, add a few more frozen fruit chunks or a handful of ice and blend again until it thickens back up.
  7. Taste the mixture and add a bit more honey if you prefer it sweeter, blending briefly again to combine.
  8. Divide the smoothie evenly between two wide, shallow bowls. Work quickly at this stage since the smoothie will start to soften and lose its thick texture if it sits out too long.
  9. Arrange the granola, sliced strawberries, shredded coconut, and chia seeds decoratively over the top of each bowl in small clusters rather than mixing them in.
  10. Serve immediately with a spoon while the base is still thick and cold.

Highlights

  • No cooking required, ready in 10 minutes
  • Thick, spoonable texture from fully frozen fruit
  • Endlessly customizable toppings
Tip: Use fruit straight from the freezer, not thawed, for a thick base you can eat with a spoon rather than drink through a straw.
Tip: Add liquid gradually, a tablespoon at a time, since it is much easier to thin a smoothie than to thicken one that has already turned soupy.
