Ingredients

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup whole milk (or milk of choice)
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 cup mixed fresh berries
  • 2 tablespoons chopped almonds

Instructions

  1. Get two jars or airtight containers, each with a lid, that hold at least 12 ounces. Wide-mouth mason jars work well for easy eating in the morning.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the rolled oats, milk, yogurt, honey, vanilla, cinnamon, and chia seeds until the honey is fully dissolved and everything is evenly combined - there should be no dry clumps of oats visible.
  3. Divide the oat mixture evenly between the two jars, filling each about two-thirds full to leave room for toppings later.
  4. Seal each jar tightly with its lid and place both in the refrigerator for at least 6 hours, or overnight, so the oats have time to fully absorb the liquid and soften.
  5. The next morning, remove the jars from the refrigerator and check the texture - the oats should look thick, creamy, and pudding-like, not soupy or crunchy.
  6. If the mixture seems too thick to stir easily, add a splash more milk (1 to 2 tablespoons) and stir until it loosens to a spoonable consistency.
  7. Give each jar a good stir to redistribute the chia seeds, which sink to the bottom overnight.
  8. Top each jar with half of the fresh berries and half of the chopped almonds just before eating, so the berries stay fresh and the almonds stay crunchy.
  9. Eat straight from the jar with a spoon, either cold from the fridge or left at room temperature for 10 minutes if you prefer it less cold.

Highlights

  • No stovetop or oven needed - fully make-ahead
  • Keeps well in the fridge for up to 4 days
  • Easy to customize with any fruit or nut butter
Tip: Stir the jar well before eating since chia seeds and oats settle at the bottom overnight.
Tip: Add toppings like berries and nuts right before eating rather than the night before, so they stay fresh and crunchy instead of getting soggy.
